For this Unit of work I have decided to focus on psychological disorders. This is a very important, widely misunderstood and avoided topic. Many individuals consider this issue as a taboo subject but I believe it needs to be discussed more and not hidden away. The social stigma results in the exclusion and shaming of people with psychological disorders, who already have enough problems and have to deal with an extensive amount day to day. The struggle with their identity is also a prominent aspect that I will explore in this unit of work.
Arnulf Rainer's images, in my opinion, portray the uncertainty and the ambiguity involved in psychological disorders, to onlookers and the individual themselves. This is one of the reasons I have chosen to include his work and try to recreate it. Ryuta Iida also plays with the theme of identity. The way she cuts and layers the images distorts facial features and the expressions of the model in order to add a sense of ambiguity. I believe her work is very relevant to the subject matter of psychological disorders as it is similar to Rainer's in the way that identity is a prominent feature. This links both of their work to psychological disorders. For other shoots I will be exploring the dehumanisation of people with psychological disorders in society. By this I mean the way society as a whole treats sufferers and how we perceive them. I will also be looking at negative body image and the extent that some individuals may go to to avoid having to see themselves. I will also be exploring the feeling of being trapped that many people with psychological disorders feel. I will be doing this by using scanners to create a picture where the model will be pushed against the scanner, as though they are stuck. In addition, I will use white sheets and lighting to create shadows and silhouettes of models. Finally I will be using a shower to create the feeling of the model being trapped in their sadness and confusion. I believe that using the shower will add to the effectiveness of that shoot as people in films are often seen crying in showers and breaking down, therefore the shower environment already has an association with feelings of sadness. |
