Perception
For this section of work I have decided to explore negative body image. This links to many eating disorders like Anorexia, Bulimia and also to a disorder called Body Dysmorphic Disorder (BDD). This is where the sufferer are constantly obsessing over their flaws and cannot stop thinking about them for very long. At an extreme severity of BDD, the person may not leave the house due to the fear of people looking at them, self harm and suicide are also risks. Many individuals on the outside may see the person has having no flaws and exaggerating them, as if they do it for attention or sympathy. Unfortunately, this is the case for many disorders as onlookers may not understand the severity of the person's feelings and how much their disorder effects them on a daily basis as they have not experienced it themselves or known someone who has before.
To present negative body image in this shoot I will be taking images of groups of friends, one model will be in every image. The constant model will be the focus of the hidden meaning as I will be scratching, drawing over or burning their face out of each image. This will represent negative body image as it will be as if the model is actually doing this to their pictures themselves as they do not want to look at themselves. As a result, the images then turn from happy memories with family and friends to having a sad, dark atmosphere.
