McGibbon's Images
Image Analysis
Content
The genre of this image is portraiture and the image is also experimental due to the use of paint pigment by Andrew McGibbon. The subject matter is the young girl, which is exaggerated by the use of the colour pigment and made to stand out in the image as the main focus. There does appear to be a story behind the image as the image does look very much like fashion photography. This idea is enhanced by the model's appearance with hair that has been styled and also make up. In addition, the colours of the paint pigments look as if they would be used as eye-shadow.The way the paint pigment has been thrown at the model suggests that the photographer is trying to make the image bold. As a result, this image could be used as part of a make-up advertisement.
Form
The photographer has chosen to place the model in the middle of the image with their body facing left and their head turned towards the camera. The paint pigment has then been thrown at the model from in front of her towards the back of her head. I believe that McGibbon has done this to allow the movement of the pigment to be captured in his image whilst also allowing the model's face to still be seen clearly, even with the paint pigment being thrown at her. This enhances the image and the black background also allows the model and the paint pigment to stand out even more so, therefore allowing them to be the only focus of the image for the viewer. The photographer would have used a fast shutter speed in order to capture the paint movement.
Process
To complete this image and the rest of the shoot I believe that the photographer would have had to find a suitable place to take the images. Somewhere with a black back drop and where the mess of the paint pigment would not be an issue. They would have then had to find willing models to participate in the shoot and once this was done they would have probably completed a test shoot to find out how to approach the shoot. For example, what angles to situate the model in, where to throw the paint pigment from and also to test the type of lighting needed. After completing the final shoot, I believe McGibbon may have used digital enhancements within Photoshop to completely finish the images.
Mood
The mood created by this image seems to be playful and fun, which has been achieved by the use of paint pigments. I really like this image as I believe it is very bold and artistic and I also believe that the colourful element enhances the image greatly. I find this work happy and very interesting, which is why I have picked this artist to use in my coursework.
The Link to 'Sublime'
I have chosen to use this image and this artist to portray 'sublime' as I believe the work greatly reflects the idea of beauty as a result of the use of the pastel colour pigment, which although make the image bolder, also make it softer due to their non-threatening, passive colours. In addition, this links the artist's work to my key theme of colour.
