Warhol's Images
Image Analysis
Content
The genre of this image is portraiture and the subject matter is distorted slightly by the black and white effect on the image, making the image slightly contrived. I believe this image does have hidden meaning as it was apart of Warhol's Screen Test series, where he made short films of his friends/celebrities who happened to come through his studio known as The Factory. Warhol was very interested in this model, Edie Segdwick, who was raised in a family with extensive mental health issues and came to New York after being a patient in a mental hospital. In Warhol's screen test series, the short films were accompanied by music, where as, in this one it was kept silent. I believe this is because Warhol was trying to focus all of the viewer's attention on to the model and her beauty which is undeniable.
Form
In this image the model is centred and looking towards the camera. I believe Warhol has captured this image from the short film as the model looks as if she is posing for a photograph, where as, in the short films the model's were all filmed just sitting and acting normally, without making an effort for the camera. As a result, I believe Warhol chose to focus on this frame as the model is effectively lit with the shadow to the left of the model's head on the wall and her pose creates a big impact in the image as she looks directly at the camera.
Process
In order to create this image and the rest of the Screen Test series, Warhol invited friends/celebrities to his studio and then he filmed them for a short period of time where the model's acted naturally, just sat down and sometimes fidgeting. In order to capture this image Warhol would have selected the certain point in the short film that he wanted to use and then isolated it to create a singular image rather than the whole film.
Mood
The mood created by this image is positive. In addition, during my research I have seen comments on the short film of this model that say they are 'mesmerised by her beauty'. Showing that the image is very effective and viewer's respond positively to the model which could be a result of Warhol's portrayal of the model and also why he did not include music in this film as her face was enough to make the viewer's pay attention.
The Link to 'Sublime'
I have chosen this artist and this image as an inspiration to portray sublime as I believe that beauty was a key factor in Warhol's making of the series of short films. In addition, the black and white aspect allows me to portray the absence of colour and its effect on the image's appearance.
