The Carter's Images
Image Analysis
Content
This photograph is experimental due to the photographers using blue/green powder paint against the natural sky background, as a result, the subject matter is abstracted. I believe that the reason the photographers have chosen to take this image is to portray the boldness of the colour of the paint pigment against the natural sky background.
Form
The photographer's have created the composition of this image with the powder paint spreading across the whole image from bottom left to top right with the clouds and sky as the background. I believe the photographers have done this to create a sense that the powder paint they have thrown in the air is actually part of the sky, as if it is one of the clouds in the sky background. This enhances the image as it allows the powder paint, which is a quite neutral blue/green colour in this particular image, to somehow both blend into the image as a whole but also stand out against the different blue in the sky. The Carters would have used a fast shutter speed in order to capture the powder paint in focus after it was thrown. Texture can be seen in the image as at the top of the powder paint cloud there are little solid parts of powder paint that have not made a cloud. I believe this adds to the image's appeal as it helps to capture the powder paints motions as it was thrown, therefore enhancing the image.
Process
The photographers would have first had to accumulate the right colour and quantity of paint pigment needed for the shoot. They then will have researched when the weather was appropriate to complete the shoot, for example when it was sunny and partly cloudy. From what I have researched I believe they did not research a location to do the shoot in as they did it in their own garden. In addition, I strongly think they would have done a test shoot in order to determine how much paint pigment they should throw into the sky and also just to practice capturing the paint in focus and in frame. Finally they may have digitally enhanced their images on software such as Photoshop.
Mood
The photographers have created a bright and happy atmosphere within this picture and the rest of the shoot as a result of the bright colours against the bright sky, which also creates a Spring/Summer season feeling within the image. I find this work interesting and also very enjoyable to observe. The image has been made very effective due to the composition, colours and the sky background used.
The Link to 'Sublime'
This work links to the topic of sublime as I believe that the work is 'of great excellence/beauty' and 'extreme/unparalleled', which is the exact definition of sublime. As a result, I think this shoot is ideal for me to recreate as part of my unit 4 coursework. In addition, the shoot has a strong link with my main theme of colour as the paint pigment used provides a very substantial colour element.
