Edits
To create these images I used a scanner and scanned my face in various positions to achieve the composition and effect I wanted, I then edited them on Photoshop. Firstly I equalised the images in order to create an overexposed look on the image. Next I made the images black and white to create the dark look that makes the hands and part of the hair stand out from the rest of the image. After this I adjusted the levels to deepen the black on the hair and slightly lighten the mid-tones to create an enhanced 3D look using the appearance of the hair on the scanner. Finally I lowered the brightness and increased the contrast to make the negative space veer towards grey rather than too white and also to enhance the look of the hair, facial features and hands that press against the surface of the scanner.
Development Ideas
To develop these images and link the student artist's work to my subject matter even more I decided to incorporate different psychological disorders directly into the images. I first selected the plain images I would use for the edits, I then used the equalize feature to deepen the black and white in the image and also allow the pink colours on the lips and hands to stand out. I then found a word cloud which contained the words that I needed, for example, 'Schizophrenia' and 'Depression'. I selected the main word I needed and separated it from the rest of the word cloud. After this I used the spot healer to distort the word slightly and I finally placed the word diagonally across the image of the face and changed the opacity to around 30% dependent upon the individual image's appearance. I then changed the levels of the original image of the face to deepen the black and white and make sure that the word was not completely opaque and that the underlying image could still be seen.
